CAN YOU SPOT THE OWL?

Image
Look closely, and you’ll see an Eastern screech owl hiding in plain sight! These owls are nocturnal and their amazing camouflage allows them to go largely unnoticed in the daytime. These owls only grow to about 22 cm (8.5 in) tall and weigh about 244 grams (8.6 oz), but they have been observed hunting squirrels and rats who rival them in length and weight. Eastern screech owls are found in North America from Canada all the way down to Mexico.

Elephants don’t drink through their trunks, but they do use them to suck up water and bring it to their mouths. A fully grown elephant can hold an estimated 10 liters of water in their trunks to make drinking easier. Baby elephants practice and refine this skill during the first few years of life, but will usually get the water directly from the source before it masters trunk dexterity.

10 years ago an eight-year-old boy had his arm bitten off by a shark. His uncle got mad and grabbed the 7-foot-long shark and dragged it to shore. The shark was killed, the arm removed from it's stomach, and reattached to the boy, who made a full recovery.

When you touch someone or share fabrics with them, you’re trading follicle mites. Unless you touch someone’s heart, in which case you don’t give them follicle mites, but a warm fuzzy feeling inside. It’s a figure of speech, you see.

The two animals soon became inseparable—they ate, played and swam together. They even developed a special communication system. Photos of the duo began to circulate and soon became int...

Oysters can change sex several times during their lives. The most dangerous animal to humans is the house fly – it carries more diseases than any other creature. This can happen when fat in the body turns into a type of soap that doesn’t rot.

world's largest video screen

Image
Arena Corinthians in Sao Paulo, Brazil is a big building. Nearing completion at the time of this writing, it seats nearly 50,000 and will be the 11th-largest stadium in Brazil, when it plays host to several FIFA World Cup football matches in 2014. It’s a sharp, modern structure, but its facade is what landed it on this list—the entire front of the building is one giant video screen. The screen will be capable of displaying images, video, and scoreboard information that will be visible to anyone even glancing in the stadium’s general direction. At 20 meters (65 ft) high and an astonishing 170 meters (560 ft) long, the screen is comprised of 34,000 LEDs and is easily the biggest video screen in the world. To put that in perspective: Americans’ jaws dropped when the gigantic video monitors of Cowboys Stadium were unveiled to the world in 2009. But the Cowboys’ monitors fail to place in the top five largest video monitors in the world, and they’re not even one-third of the ...

world's largest outdoor swimming pool

Image
Most hotel swimming pools are nothing special—they’re known for being small, crowded, and shallow. In an attempt to keep those adjectives out of their pool, designers of the outdoor swimming pool at San Alfonso Del Mar Resort in Chile seem to have overcompensated a bit. In photos, it looks like some kind of weird, clear lagoon running the length of the resort’s main beach. Upon further inspection, yes, it is actually a swimming pool, and the sheer numbers associated with it boggle the mind. Covering 20 acres, the pool is over 900 meters (3,000 ft) long (the second-longest, in Morocco, is a measly 137 meters). Its deep end is 35 meters (115 ft)—also a world record—and it holds 66 million gallons of water. Also, it could engulf 20 Olympic-sized swimming pools, took five years and nearly $1 billion to build, and costs about $2 million yearly to maintain. The pool uses an advanced suction and filtration system and virtually no chemicals, making it surprisingly environmentall...
